Jim's son Ian told us "My father was a right-hand man to Dunc and went down to Drygrange on a Sunday night to count the weeks takings and fix the rota for the workers on the following weekend all local men doing it for some spare cash. (Further pages on Jim's role to be added)

From George's Son "I remember Duncan when I was about 10 years old my father George brown used to work for him printing and doorman. I remember going to drygrange where he lived and had his office. Also remember getting into trouble I recall Dunc giving me a talking to .my dad used to work the gastetnerre printing machine down there and would usually have loads of black and white photos of the bands they were promoting at the time like Hemans Hermits sandy Shaw. Beaky dozy. . Mac b tich, the stones etc. Last I heard of young Dunc he lived in Tweedbank for a. while then moved up North. Met him a few times through a friend of mine Ron Taylor. he was a hell of a nice geezer."

Margaret Sykes
Throughout the heyday of Duncan Mackinnon Borders Dances, Margaret work ‘on the cloaks’ in venues including Haddington and Carlisle Market Hall. She was born in 1933 in Melrose, her maiden name being Margaret Bunyan. On leaving school at fifteen she worked in local tweed mills, before graduating to psychiatric nursing at Dingleton Hospital in the 1950s. Margaret left the area in 1972, and spent forty-four years in England and Isle of Man working as a qualified psychiatric nurse, before returning to Melrose in 2016 and where she continues to live. The Photo shows Margaret with her Husband Paddy who also worked for Duncan. |
