A long time ago in a quiet town called Greenlaw, in Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders, a group of enthusiastic musicians with a burning desire to play ‘Rock’n’Roll’ music got together and formed a band called ‘The Castle Kings’. The band took its name from the Castle Hotel, Greenlaw, where the band’s founder and manager, Harry Smith, lived – Harry’s parents were the proprietors of the hotel.
In addition to Harry, the other founding members of the band were: Norman Small, Ainsley Purves, Tommy Turnbull, Bob Smith, Jimmy Hay, and Mike Whellans.
The band was formed in 1958 and apart from a short break of a few months in 1962 continued a successful existence right through until the end of 1965. Although during its time the band’s membership changed a few times, the following core members were present throughout its entire life: Harry Smith, Norman Small, and Tommy Turnbull. New members John Cowan and Ian Wease joined in 1962 and 1964 respectively
